A Legacy of Faith and Education: Celebrating Over a Century of Empowering Young Women

Bethel Mekane Yesus School's journey began in 1918 when Dr. Thomas Lambie, an American missionary doctor, arrived in western Ethiopia to provide medical care during a devastating Spanish flu outbreak. His compassionate service opened doors for both healthcare and the sharing of the Gospel in the region. Recognizing the profound need for education, especially for girls, Dr. Lambie and his team established one of the earliest mission schools in Sayo, laying the foundation for a legacy that would span generations.

In 1924, with the support of Empress Menen and local authorities, the mission expanded to Addis Ababa, establishing a girls' boarding school dedicated to academic excellence and spiritual growth. This institution quickly became a beacon of hope, nurturing young women who would go on to become leaders in various sectors across Ethiopia. Despite challenges, including the Italian occupation and difficulties during the Derg regime, the school remained steadfast in its mission, adapting and evolving to meet the needs of its students.

Over the decades, the school underwent several transformations, both in name and structure, eventually becoming Bethel Mekane Yesus School under the stewardship of the Bethel Synod and the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY). The school has become known not only for its academic and spiritual foundation, but also as the starting point for countless women who have gone on to lead, inspire, and serve in fields ranging from government and education to healthcare, business, and ministry. Today, the school serves over 1,000 students from kindergarten through grade 12, offering a curriculum that integrates academic rigor with Christian values.

In 2024, Bethel Mekane Yesus School joyfully celebrated its 100th anniversary, honoring a century of unwavering commitment to empowering young women through faith-based education. As we look to the future, we continue to seek partnerships that will enrich our students' experiences. We welcome volunteer teachers who are passionate about making a difference and are open to exploring scholarship opportunities to support our students' aspirations.
